Dehydration in Winter

Winter is one time of the year where the heat is not a problem. So hydrating is often not at the forefront of athletes when they are training. This can actually be a problem because even though it is not hot you still need to hydrate when you are exercising.

This is often why athletes can cramp when it is cold weather and they use a lot of effort over a prolonged period. This can be as a result of dehydration as well as a lack of magnesium.

For maintaining hydration and your magnesium levels when you are exercising all year round check out the range of Endura sports drinks at our online store.

Don't do or use it on race day what you haven’t tried in training

There is a very good piece of advice that says that you shouldn’t do or use on race day what you haven’t tried in training. This is a very smart tip that even the most seasoned competitor sometimes overlooks. If you do overlook this 9 times out of 10 it will come back to bite you.
This advice stands for using nutrition or sports drink during the race that you haven’t used in training which could have an extremely negative effect on your race.

It also applies to using equipment that you haven’t tried before. A good example of this is the athlete who buys a new set of race shoes the day before the race and finds ou ton race day that they produce some really bad blisters.

So please if you have a race coming up don’t try anything new and give yourself the best chance to get the result you have trained hard for.

CRAMP AND SALT TABLETS

Cramping is one thing that can drastically affect your race performance.

One of the common misconceptions is that using salt tablets (sodium chloride tablets) when you are racing can help prevent you from cramping. This is actually not true.

Salt tablets are very useful when you are doing longer races but not for preventing cramp. What salt tablets do is promote gastric emptying. In other words the Sodium in salt tablets helps push fluid and nutrition through your stomach. From personal experience I have found that taking 2 tablets (about 1200mg) per hour works best.

You can use straight sodium chloride tablets or you can use a buffered salt tablet such as Lava Salts.

If it is cramp prevention you are after then it is magnesium you need. Each time a muscle contracts, magnesium is used. That is why using a magnesium supplement can help prevent cramping.

One of the best Magnesium supplements on the market is Endura Max.
